HUSD spending report shows focus on classrooms, teacher pay

The Higley Unified School District will continue to prioritize positive student outcomes through strategic resource allocation and ensuring that every dollar spent contributes to the benefit of its students, preparing them for limitless opportunities.

Higley Unified School District (HUSD) stands as an exemplary district for efficient resource allocation in the AZ Auditor General’s annual Classroom Spending Report. This year’s report reflects HUSD’s priorities in instructional spending to enrich the educational experiences of its students. With 72.6% of its budget dedicated to classroom spending, including 60.7% towards instruction, HUSD surpasses its peer group average of 53.1%, showcasing a commitment to academic excellence.

Over the last several years, HUSD has consistently demonstrated a dedication to enhancing instructional spending. In the most recent fiscal year (FY 2023), instructional spending increased to 60.7%, marking a positive trajectory in educational investment. Operational efficiency measures further underscore HUSD's responsible financial management. Despite very low spending relative to peer averages in administration and transportation, HUSD maintains high-quality educational services where student test scores exceed state averages in every category.

The district’s dedication to educational excellence is also reflected in its investment in teacher salaries. With an average teacher salary of $66,796, HUSD attracts and retains top-tier educators. Through responsible fiscal management, Higley teachers have received raises each year for the last decade.

“Over the last three years Higley has made it an emphasis in the annual budget process to prioritize teacher salary and the Auditor General's report highlights the efforts Higley has made to improve teacher salaries,” said HUSD CFO Tyler Moore. “We’re proud to be a district that utilizes funding to its fullest extent and prioritizes learning in all situations.”
