ASU online students to meet for first time at April 28 digital prom

ASU Prep Digital students will drop their figurative masks and step away from their digital screens tomorrow night to don literal masks as they gather for a Midnight Masquerade-themed prom.

Choosing a non-traditional learning path might mean your high school experience looks a little different from your neighbor’s, but it doesn’t have to mean forgoing the sacred rites of passage that come with these formative years – especially momentous occasions like prom.

ASU Prep Digital students will drop their figurative masks and step away from their digital screens tomorrow night to don literal masks as they gather for a Midnight Masquerade-themed prom.

In many ways, the event will look much like other proms across the Valley, but there are a few significant differences. Most notable is the fact that many of the couples and groups hitting the dance floor will be meeting in person for the very first time. While online group projects, peer collaboration and virtual clubs have had them socializing in digital air space, many have never shared a physical classroom, bantered in the hallways or struck up a conversation in the cafeteria. After all, ASU Prep students are scattered from coast to coast and even around the world.

Another quirky distinction about this new take on the prom tradition is the way royalty is selected. No prom is complete without its king and queen, and for this evening’s festivities, the Prom King and Prom Queen will be chosen by raffle.

This year’s event promises to be a night to remember with a masquerade-themed formal attire, DJ entertainment and engaging activities.

Open to all ASU Prep Digital students, grades 9 through 12, “A Night to Remember: Midnight Masquerade” prom will take place from 7 to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, April 28 at the Arizona Science Center, located at 600 E. Washington St. in downtown Phoenix.
