Veterans Day celebrations across the Valley

To recognize local veterans, there will be a lot of dining deals and patriotic events going on this Veterans Day week. Here's a roundup of what we've found to honor our veterans.

Keys to Progress

For the 11th Annual Keys to Progress, two Phoenix military veterans will be receiving the keys to new rides on Wednesday, Nov. 8. This year’s giveaway brings the total number of vehicles donated through the program to over 1,000. Over 80 veterans throughout the country will be getting the keys to their brand new vehicle on today. 

"At its core, the Keys to Progress vehicle giveaway program is just one way we celebrate our nation's veterans, and these events are a strong source of pride for everyone who works at Progressive," said Tricia Griffith, CEO at Progressive.

Salute to Service

From Nov. 8-18 Arizona State University will be hosting its Salute to Service events to celebrate and honor everyone who has served the nation.

From game watch parties to movies on the field, a “Thank You for Your Service” networking event, the 20th Annual Veterans Day Weekend Pow Wow, and so much more, it’s a full week of celebration. 

“We invite the university community and the public to join us for the fun and memorable events we have in store for this year’s very special Salute to Service,” said Michelle Loposky, chair for the Salute to Service planning committee and Pat Tillman Veterans Center director of development and strategic partnerships. “There is something for everyone, and most of the events are free.”

Chandler Center for the Arts

The U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors will be coming together to perform “This We’ll Defend” at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Starting at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11, the concert will be free to the public in honor of Veterans Day.

To secure your spot to see America’s Big Band, the Jazz Ambassadors (touring jazz orchestra of the United States Army) make your reservation by calling 480-782-2680 or visiting chandlercenter.org. The evening will be full of celebrations through music and storytelling to create this video-integrated, patriotic concert experience.

Phoenix Veterans Day Parade

For this year’s parade on Nov. 11, the selected theme is “Never Forget. Forever Honor.” The public can submit nominees for their Honor Our Heroes program with individuals they think are deserving of extra recognition for their time serving. Awards will be given to selected winners with selected recipients from each era of service. 

“The theme captures the essence of the parade, bringing together veterans from all eras with the community who have given a portion of their life to defend our freedom. We will never forget their sacrifices, and we hope always to remember their service to our country,” said Parade Coordinator Paula Pedene.

Veterans Free Dentistry Day

Associated Dental Care Providers will be honoring Veterans Day by offering free dental services on Friday, Nov. 10. Patients will need to show a valid form of their veterans ID and it’s first come, first serve.

“We understand that many veterans in our community and across the nation haven’t been to the dentist for a long period of time. Some veterans don’t have the financial means,” said Dr. Linda Perkins of Associated Dental Care. “This event is a great opportunity for us to share our time and resources with the men and women who have dedicated their lives to our country.”

Arizona Science Center

With a valid ID, veterans and active military personnel gain free entry to the Arizona Science Center Nov. 10 and 11. Make it a whole family outing because each veteran gets to bring up to five family members to join them. Current exhibitions include the Science of Guinness World Records, Mission Future, POP! The Science of Bubbles and more.

Sports Clips Help A Hero Scholarships

For the 10th year, Sports Clips Haircuts is partnering with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) to help raise money for scholarships. These scholarships help veterans and service members beyond G.I. Bill benefits to help individuals meet education expenses. 

At participating Sports Clips locations an additional $2 per hair care service will be donated from the company nationwide in support of Sports Clips Help A Hero Scholarships. Patrons can donate to Help A Hero at their in-store checkout kiosk or by texting “HERO” to 71777 from now through Nov. 11.

Additionally, many locations nationwide will be offering free haircuts to service members and veterans.

Museum of Illusions

Throughout Veterans Day weekend all veterans or active military members will be able to visit the Museum of Illusions for free. With over 60 unique visual and educational installations to explore, the museum is the perfect family-friendly place to spend the holiday.
