Free sun safety by AZ Skin Cancer Foundation April 30 for Valley's special needs community

Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation providing sun safety education, skin cancer screening and more for the Valley's special needs community in partnership with Special Olympics Arizona and ARCH AZ.

The Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation has a community service event providing free sun safety education, preventive skin cancer screenings and sun protection items for the Valley's special needs community in partnership with Special Olympics Arizona and ARCH AZ.

While the first event was on Friday, the next one is on Tuesday, April 30 at Arizona Recreation Center for the Handicapped (ARCH AZ), located at 1550 W. Colter St. in Phoenix.

Skin cancer is the leading cancer in the United States and in Arizona. More than 5 million cases are detected each year. Prevention and early detection through medical skin exams are essential to maintaining healthy skin.

"The Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation is committed to increasing access to preventive health services, including skin cancer screenings and sun safety education, for all Arizonans, regardless of their circumstances," said Jenifer Hunt, program director at the Arizona Skin Cancer Foundation. "By partnering with ARCH AZ and Special Olympics Arizona, we are able to reach residents and neighbors who might otherwise miss out on important health services."

Statistics underscore the importance of these events as 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. In addition, the risk of melanoma doubles if a person has had more than five sunburns. Regular screenings can detect signs of skin cancer early when it is most treatable.

At each event, experienced medical providers will exam skin in visible areas and ensure that participants receive the highest standard of care.

This initiative underscores ASCF’s work to foster inclusive health practices and awareness in Arizona. All Arizonans deserve access to life-saving prevention and early detection services.
