As trees begin to bud and winter turns to spring, Arizona Science Center announces upcoming events coming to the center this season. From a new traveling exhibition to a total solar eclipse, the science center is gearing up to host a plethora of springtime happenings for all ages.
On Friday, March 8, Science With A TWIST will return for guests aged 21 and over, and this time they’re going back to the ‘80s. With a nod to the science center’s 40th anniversary, guests will be welcomed for an evening of exploring science from the decade through interactive activities, lectures, a special showing of the hit movie Back to the Future and more. Learn the science behind ‘80s beauty trends, the technology of DNA fingerprinting and everyone’s favorite ‘80s creation, laser swords. Top the evening off with pizza and a full bar set up to indulge throughout the night.
For kids and parents looking for a cool place to be this spring, Arizona Science Center offers wonderous activities and adventures for all ages. Recently opened OceanXperience gives visitors access to OceanX’s renowned OceanXplorer vessel and the cutting-edge science, technology and media the ship uses to explore the ocean and bring research back to the surface. “Xplorers” will learn the ins and outs of marine biology through guided research missions, in which budding marine biologists can follow marine animals like orcas, humpback whales and hammerhead sharks to collect data and understand how different animals coexist. OceanXperience is included free with an Arizona Science Center membership or general admission ticket. Kids under 3 are always free.
CAMP INNOVATION is also making a comeback for spring break. From March 11-15 for children ages 6 through 12 with Big Wild World, a day camp where future scientists will investigate extreme weather patterns including monsoons, tornadoes, earthquakes and more. Learn the science behind what leads to these natural occurrences along with the importance of safety while outdoors. The day camp will allow kids to partake in hands-on activities and experiments from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the week of spring break.
On April 8, Arizona Science Center will celebrate the total solar eclipse with a Solar Eclipse Viewing Party outside the science center’s entrance in Heritage & Science Park. During this free community event, guests will be given free eclipse glasses to safely view the solar eclipse, and science center experts will be on-site with interactive activities and science staff to teach all about the solar phenomenon. Phoenix will experience about 64% coverage at the height of the eclipse, making this a partial solar eclipse for our community. While the Moon at the peak of the eclipse will cover the majority of the Sun, slightly less than half of the Sun will be visible, making this eclipse simulate a Cheshire cat smile.
