‘Tis the season to be giving: Organ Stop Pizza Christmas in July helps neighbors in need

It's hot outside, but it's cool inside at Organ Stop Pizza for the United Food Bank Christmas in July food drive challenge and a fun family night out.

Something cool to do this weekend while giving back to the community is taking the family to the Christmas in July food drive at Organ Stop Pizza in the East Valley, the state's oldest pizza restaurant and "Home of The Mighty Wurlitzer Pipe Organ."

Christmas in July is an annual food drive in the summer that aims to help stock United Food Bank’s shelves since summer is the hardest time of the year for many individuals and families in Arizona. Kids are out of school, meaning parents have the added pressure of providing more food. Temperatures continue to rise, making electric bills higher – forcing families to make tough decisions like choosing between paying bills or paying for food.

"United Food Bank's shelves are at their lowest this time of year, and our annual Christmas in July food drive helps put meals on the table for thousands of Arizonans. With their buying power, one dollar provides five meals for those in need. This is a great way to give back to the community," said Chandler resident Jack Barz, co-owner and operator of Organ Stop Pizza. "When you drop off donations for this food drive in July you will be able to step out of the triple-digit temps into the spirit of the holidays. We've decked out the Mighty Wurlitzer and walls with a Christmas feel. Jingle all the way to Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa and help a worthy cause."

Barz added that donations help them continue to help those who struggle daily for food this summer. Meals will be delivered to senior citizens, fewer children will go to bed hungry, and many parents will worry less, he said.

Bring in at least two approved "non-perishable" food items or make a $2 cash donation until July 31 and receive 10% off your entire kitchen bill that evening while enjoying The Mighty Wurlitzer Organ, delicious pizzas, pasta, salad and more.

One lucky guest will win a free stocking of Organ Stop Pizza goodies each evening and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting each Saturday and Sunday in July.

Most needed items are cash donations, peanut butter, canned meat, canned fruit and vegetables, cereal (whole grain, low sugar), soup, stews, chili, beans, milk (canned/dried), rice and pasta. No glass jars, baby food or opened food.

Organ Stop Pizza is located at 1149 E. Southern Ave. in Mesa, at the southwest corner of Southern Avenue and Stapley Drive.
