Intel's Ocotillo campus recognized for sustainability initiatives

Intel Arizona awarded top honor from statewide sustainability-focused organization at annual Environmental Excellence Awards.

To commemorate Arizona Forward’s 50th anniversary and the 41st Annual Environmental Excellence Awards, the organization presented a special award to Intel to recognize the company’s consistent and outstanding achievements when it comes to environmental sustainability.

“This special award was given to Intel for their longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship, as their impact spans many of the categories in the awards program and demonstrates both a historical and future commitment to sustainability,” said Lori Singleton, president and CEO of Arizona Forward.

The award recognized Intel’s company-wide commitment to sustainability initiatives and its local efforts at the company’s Ocotillo campus, where Intel’s water recycling and treatment facility treats over 9 million gallons of water daily that can be reused for manufacturing operations. Intel also works to reduce its total use of freshwater, and as a result, the company conserved more than 3.1 billion gallons of water in 2020 at the Ocotillo campus.

As part of Intel’s RISE Goal to achieve net positive water in their global operations, the company also collaborates with Arizona nonprofit and conservation organizations, funding projects that enhance community and environmental well-being. Intel has funded 20 water restoration projects in Arizona, which will restore over 2 billion gallons of water once fully implemented.

"Intel has a long history in Arizona, and we’re proud to be recognized for our sustainability initiatives here in Arizona," said Liz Shipley, public affairs director at Intel Arizona. "Our ambitious sustainability goals aren't mere targets; they're the framework of our corporate responsibility. We aim to drive community wellbeing, inspire other businesses, and leave a lasting legacy of sustainability as we continue to pursue ways to positively impact the environment."

Intel’s sustainability goals span water, energy, climate and waste. This includes Intel’s goal to achieve net positive water by 2030, achieve zero waste to landfill by 2023, and achieve net zero greenhouse emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2040.

Intel in Arizona has received various recognitions over the last few years, including awards for contributions to Arizona's technology industry, manufacturing sector, inclusivity and diversity in procurement spending, and corporate philanthropy. In 2022, Intel was also named a finalist for Arizona Forward’s 40th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards.

Intel began operations in Arizona in 1979, and today is home to more than 12,000 Arizonans developing and manufacturing technology that is the foundation for addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit intel.com/Arizona.
