Spotlight on QCUSD alumni during graduation month

Our alumni stand as testament to the everlasting value of a QCUSD education. Many have gone on to become role models and leaders within our community and far beyond. It's these achievements we seek to honor with our Alumni Spotlight recognition, celebrating those who continue to make a significant impact in the community.

This month marks a milestone for senior students nationwide as they close one chapter of their lives and venture into new beginnings—whether it’s higher education, immediate careers, world travels or other pursuits.

At Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD), we educate more than 14,000 students across Queen Creek and east Mesa. Not only do we provide a foundation of knowledge from preschool through 12th grade, but also instill lessons that prepare our students for life beyond our classrooms.

Our alumni stand as testament to the everlasting value of a QCUSD education. Many have gone on to become role models and leaders within our community and far beyond. It's these achievements we seek to honor with our Alumni Spotlight recognition, celebrating those who continue to make a significant impact in the community.

Take, for example, Kody Funderburk, a proud Queen Creek High School graduate. Kody, who was drafted in 2018, made headlines with his Major League Baseball debut for the Minnesota Twins. In his first appearance, he delivered two perfect innings against the Cleveland Guardians—an inspiring achievement that highlights the possibilities that arise from dedication and hard work.

Cesar Urena, another Queen Creek High alum, serves as a fire captain at the Queen Creek Fire Department. Cesar credits Coach Hardt for instilling the discipline and time management skills that have been crucial in his career and development as a firefighter. These stories aren’t just about personal success; they’re about the application of foundational values learned right here in our district.

Our commitment to community and education is also reflected in the stories of former students who choose to return as educators, like Samantha Garvin. Now teaching at Katherine Mecham Barney Elementary, Samantha represents a lineage of educational dedication, following in the footsteps of her mother who also taught within QCUSD.

We are proud of all our alumni and are committed to continuing to showcase the incredible work they do, no matter where their journeys have taken them. If you know a Queen Creek Unified graduate who is making a difference, please help us recognize their contributions by nominating them for our Alumni Spotlight Award HERE.

Dr. Perry Berry has been superintendent of the Queen Creek Unified School District since June 2015.
