QCUSD sports tips: How your student athlete can prepare for their next tryout

Junior high tryouts start on Oct. 19. High school tryouts/practices for winter sports begin Oct. 31.

As the second quarter of the school year begins this week in the Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD), schools start to prepare for the next quarter, including the next athletic season. Basketball, soccer and softball are a few of the sports hosting tryouts in the upcoming quarter as students come back from fall break.

Here are some top tips from QCUSD athletic coaches on how to prepare for tryouts:

  1. Stay hydrated.
While we are entering the cooler season we forget to stay hydrated throughout the day. That is why it’s important to stay hydrated before and during a tryout. You will be working hard in the tryout, so a properly hydrated body with a good healthy breakfast and lunch, will help you be ready.
  2. Stay active before tryouts.
Go for a jog, get some friends and play the sport, and find ways to stay active between seasons. If you show up to tryouts before getting in shape, the competition has passed you by and gives your evaluator a sneak peek at how hard you’ve worked when no one is looking. Train for tryouts by doing drills and working on skills that you think coaches will evaluate you on.
  3. Reach out to the coach.
You can introduce yourself before the tryouts begin. Developing a relationship, making your goals clear, and shedding some light on where you see yourself currently and where you can grow can assist in the evaluation process.
  4. Mentally prepare.
Trying out doesn’t just include physical training. You have to prepare yourself mentally as well. Visualize yourself at the tryouts, practicing the drills, imagine playing your sport as if you were on the team. Also, it is important to get rest the day before tryouts (this is the best time to visualize yourself playing the game).
  5. It's all about attitude.
Bring a great attitude and all equipment needed for practice. Remember to show good sportsmanship to others who are trying out with you. You never know who is feeling nervous or anxious, but above all, relax and have fun.
