Inaugural Desert Challenge Tournament a success at San Tan Foothills High

Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb was a celebrity guest, and spoke to the wrestlers and fans. This event will be an annual offering of San Tan Foothills High School, which is part of the Florence Unified School District.

San Tan Foothills High School hosted a 27 team tournament, the Desert Challenge Tournament, Jan. 21-22.

It was the inaugural year for this varsity only level tournament. The wrestling was great, and the top four teams were given trophies, while the top eight individuals in each weight earned a medal.

The top teams were:

Champion – Queen Creek High School

Runner-up – Mesquite High School

Third Place – Wilcox High School

Fourth Place – Thunderbird High School

San Tan Foothills High medal winners were:

Norvin Avila – 106 pounds – third place

Jesus Villalobos – 175 pounds – seventh place

Aiden Kirk – 215 pounds – third place

Aiden Gildas – 126 pounds –  seventh place

 

English teacher Darren Johnson is head coach of the San Tan Foothills High School wrestling team and was the Desert Challenge Tournament director.
