HUSD students learn leadership habits

San Tan Elementary was recently recognized as a 2023 Leader in Me Lighthouse Academic Honor Roll School. The Lighthouse Academic Honor Roll recognizes Leader in Me schools that have both met the rigorous requirements necessary to achieve and maintain Lighthouse certification and show exemplary academic growth or proficiency, as measured by the state accountability standards.

San Tan Elementary School is a leader among leaders after hosting its inaugural Student Lighthouse Leadership assembly, which brought students together from the Higley Unified School District (HUSD), as well as neighboring public and charter schools for a day of leadership activities and presentations.

The student lighthouse team is part of the Leader in Me program based on Franklin Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective Leaders. In this educational program, teachers shape students into amazing leaders on and off campus by instilling similar habits, including “think win-win" and “put first things first.” Leader in Me has been implemented in HUSD at both San Tan and Chaparral elementary schools.

“It’s schools like San Tan that serve as examples for Leader in Me schools, throughout the world” said Sherry Richards, HUSD interim superintendent.

The school’s Student Lighthouse Leadership assembly included lighthouse teams from San Tan Elementary, Chaparral Elementary, Country Place Leadership Academy and Ironwood Elementary. Students actively participated in team-building activities, tours, engaging sessions and a special message from Sean Covey.

As the Seven Habits resonate with students, the impact becomes evident to teachers, parents and administrators. Life-ready leaders showcase principles of responsibility, discipline and teamwork, creating an atmosphere that can be seen, heard and felt throughout the educational community.
