Frances Brandon Pickett Elementary (FBPE) students and their families attended a special event to highlight Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, a program that encourages college and career readiness for all students.
AVID Night incorporated science, technology and art to help spark interest in students and showcase to their parents what programs are available in the Queen Creek Unified School District (QCUSD).
Some of the activities featured at this event included grade-specific projects, a food truck and booths featuring high school clubs.
“AVID is all about college career readiness,” said Julianna Sommer, a teacher at FBPE who helped organize the event. “Getting students excited about high school and seeing the activities they can do.”
While AVID night served as an everning of fun for students and families, it gave parents and teachers a chance to meet in a relaxed atmosphere.
“For me, as a teacher, I get to meet the parents outside of the classroom,” said Sommer. “We wanted to have parents involved in our school more, and this night helped with that.”
Sommer said the event was open to the community, not just families and students of FBPE.
“We are part of a big community,” said Sommer, “and I thought this was a great way to reach out and invite families who are not familiar with our school.”
FBPE will also host a "Kindergarten Round-Up" event open to the public on Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m. and encourage anyone whose child is ready for kindergarten to come to check out QCUSD elementary schools during these events. Learn more about Kindergarten Round-Up HERE.
