Things to do: Celebrate Latin jazz at MIM April 20-21

Continue the festivities on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the MIM Music Theater with a performance by local Latin fusion band Jaleo. They will showcase their diverse repertoire, featuring salsa, Latin jazz, cumbia, merengue, bachata, bolero and cha-cha rhythms.

Experience Latin Jazz will be at the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix April 20-21.

MIM will celebrate the vibrant culture of Latin jazz with captivating performances and interactive activities for all ages. Try your hand at making and playing conga drums, delve into the history of Latin jazz with a curator talk by Daniel Piper, and enjoy live performances by Harmony Project Phoenix and the Andrés Martínez Trío.

Continue the festivities on Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the MIM Music Theater with a performance by local Latin fusion band Jaleo. They will showcase their diverse repertoire, featuring salsa, Latin jazz, cumbia, merengue, bachata, bolero and cha-cha rhythms.

All activities happen on Saturday and Sunday unless noted otherwise.

  • Craft: Conga Drums, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Make your own music with conga drums, an integral instrument for Latin jazz music.
  • Photo Booth, 9 a.m. to p.m. Have your picture taken in our hands-free photo booth. Digitally share your pictures and tag with #MIMphx for a chance to be featured on MIM social media.
  • Curator Talk: Latin Jazz Roots and Pioneers, 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Explore the roots of Latin jazz and its pioneering artists since the 1940s with Daniel Piper, MIM’s curator for Latin America. Learn about the dynamic musical exchanges between the Latin Caribbean and the United States that fueled this international genre’s development.
  • Performance: Harmony Project Phoenix, 11:30 a.m. to noon. Listen to upbeat orchestral Latin jazz tunes from Harmony Project Phoenix’s Orquesta Juvenil Latino Caribeña (Latin Caribbean Children’s Orchestra). 
  • Performance: Andrés Martínez Trío, 1 to 1:30 p.m. Enjoy a dynamic performance from local Latin jazz band Andrés Martínez Trío as they masterfully mix salsa, cumbia, cha-cha, and Latin jazz into a musical blend.
  • Film: Buena Vista Social Club, 2 to 3:45 p.m. Watch a screening of this documentary following the formation and subsequent successes of the Buena Vista Social Club, an ensemble of legendary Cuban musicians.
