Local group promotes lifelong learning through classes, events, fellowship

New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning invites active seniors to join organization at Lifelong Learning 101, a free drop-in event showcasing fall, peer-led classes and activities from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 9 in the Saguaro Building at the Mesa Community College Red Mountain Campus, 7110 E. McKellips Road.

New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning (NFLL), a Mesa Community College non-credit community education program for active seniors, hosts Lifelong Learning 101, a free drop-in event showcasing fall, peer-led classes and activities this weekend.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 9 in the Saguaro Building at the Mesa Community College Red Mountain Campus, 7110 E. McKellips Road.

“Lifelong Learning 101 provides community members an opportunity to talk with our members about their experiences, learn about what we have planned for the fall and to have questions answered in person,” said NFLL President Cindy Schrantz. “We offer virtual options for individuals who seasonally leave the Valley but want to remain connected or those who are unable to join us out in the community for whatever reason.”

For less than $10 a month, NFLL members have access to luncheons, workshops, field trips and member social outings and volunteer opportunities. NFLL volunteers continue to be a staple at MCC Empty Bowls events, helping to raise funds for Paz de Christo, a Mesa outreach organization that feeds, clothes and helps those in need to become more self-sufficient.

“What I love about New Frontiers is the interaction with my fellow members. Learning in a social environment is how I think of it. I’m constantly amazed at the backgrounds of our members and their willingness to share their experiences, taking us on armchair adventures throughout the world or leading us in hiking and biking,” said Peggy Randolph, a Tempe resident who has been a member of NFLL since 1997. “I especially enjoy field trips and 'out-to-lunch' gatherings. Every semester offers something new.”

Annual NFLL membership is $80 and covers activities from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. Members may attend as many in-person and online classes or social events as they wish. Some classes may have fees for supplies and social events are normally pay-your-way.
