The right way to gift a pet

While a pet may seem like the perfect gift, there are a few things to keep in mind before gifting a cuddly companion this Christmas. A furry friend can make the holiday season more magical, but they also add extra responsibility once the festivities are over.

‘Tis the season of giving. While a pet may seem like the perfect gift, there are a few things to keep in mind before gifting a cuddly companion this Christmas. A furry friend can make the holiday season more magical, but they also add extra responsibility once the festivities are over.

Families looking to add a new four-legged addition can make an informed decision with the following tips.

Learn more about the giftee

There are a few questions to ask before gifting a pet. Does the giftee have any allergies? Are they allowed to have pets in their living situation? Can they afford the financial responsibility of owning a pet? Have they talked about wanting a pet? Learn about their daily schedule to ensure they are ready to take on the responsibility of an animal. Bringing a new pet home is a huge time and financial commitment so these must be factored into the decision-making process.

Visit the shelter

Make sure to involve the recipient in the process! By visiting a shelter, the recipient can learn about what they’re looking for in a furry friend. Maybe they originally thought they wanted a larger dog but then realized a smaller breed is a better fit for their home and lifestyle. When exploring options, recipients can learn about different breeds, temperaments and activity requirements to make the best decision for them. They may even decide that owning a pet isn’t the best option for them right now.

Deck the home

Not with boughs of holly but with pet supplies. To avoid any added stress during the already hectic holiday season, it’s important to prepare prior to the arrival of a pet. Stock up on essentials like a bed, food bowl, collar, leash and more. New pet owners should put away items that they don’t want their pet chewing on. Set up a space where the pet can feel comfortable and adjust to their new environment.

Consider gifting a senior pet

Although puppies and kittens are a popular choice, adopting a senior pet has benefits that many people may not be aware of. Often, older furry friends have already mastered basic commands and have calmer temperaments. They make the perfect fit for families who may not have the time to train a new pet.

Remember, a pet is more than just a gift you get during the holidays but a commitment that can require a lot of attention but most importantly, a lot of love!
