Residents may see the canines out and about in the community with their handlers as they're undergoing four months of training and growing into their new roles.

Matthew Skowron has been promoted to deputy chief at QCFMD. He started with the department as a firefighter when it was established in 2008. Skowron is a third-generation firefighter who was born and raised in Queen Creek.

Chief Randy Brice was so impressed after hearing how successful these simple tools were during crisis calls involving children and individuals with special needs, he decided to create sensory item kits for every officer and detective at QCPD.

“You may have two minutes or even less to escape from a home fire from the time that smoke alarm goes off. Your success in getting out of your home during a fire depends on a working smoke detector and advance planning on how you are going to get out,” said QCFMD Fire Chief Vance Gray.

This year’s campaign works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, this year's campaign is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape." They want to educate everyone about simple but important actions one can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

DPS officials said the one person in the SUV died on scene and the other three were taken to trauma centers in the area and listed in critical condition.

"Three students were transported and unfortunately one died at the hospital. The individual who passed away is a 16 year old male. QCPD is investigating this as a possible overdose; the investigation is ongoing," said Constance Halonen‑Wilson, communications and marketing manager for the Town of Queen Creek, adding that the "initial call came in at approximately 10:40 p.m." on Monday, Oct. 3.

“We are excited to add new members to our fire family. We are looking for recruit firefighters who are excited to work for a fire department that is growing, has promotional opportunities, and professionals who emphasize service to the organization and community we serve,” said QCFMD Fire Chief Vance Gray.

“We are so grateful for this support. Our overall goal is to keep our roads safe and ensure that everyone in Queen Creek gets to wherever they’re going safely. Grants like this are crucial to helping our agency get the technology our officers need to be able to do their jobs thoroughly and accurately,” said Queen Creek Police Chief Randy Brice.
