Steve grew up in Mesa where he spent his days riding his bike miles to the second canal with his brother Ron.  They would spend the day playing in the canal and eating watermelon out of the farm fields and wouldn’t ride home until dinnertime.  He loved spending time at the bait shop and hanging out with all of his cousins and uncles.  Whether it was hunting, fishing, or just out at the lake sitting and enjoying all of nature’s wonders, Steve loved spending time outdoors.

Steve’s greatest love was Tena, his wife of 51 years, his junior high school sweetheart. They had two sons.  Steve loved taking his family camping, including road trips to Disneyland.  He loved gardening

With his granddaughters and also loved to take them fishing.  Steve was a tenderhearted, loving and caring person, a devoted husband, father and papa.

Steve retired from ADOT after 18 years.  He was a lead tech and assigned the jobs of the day.  Along with his regular position he was also part of the Alert team that did traffic control for fatal accidents on the freeways for 16 years.

Steve is survived by his wife Tena, sons, Steve (Liz) Mayo and Rob (Teresa) Mayo, granddaughters Hannah (Cody) Powers, Ariel (Taylor) Key, and Victoria (Jacob) Nelson, great grandkids Hopi and Leo; brother, Ronnie Mayo, and Sister Debbie (Randall) Mayo; as well as many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.
