Southwest Human Development is kicking off its annual Grow A Reader Virtual Book Drive, offering Arizonans a chance to support childhood literacy. Running through April 15, the initiative aims to provide books to children who may not have access to them at home, helping foster early language and communication skills essential for academic success.
Addressing the literacy gap
In many Phoenix-area neighborhoods, two out of three children lack books at home, a critical factor affecting their educational development. Research indicates that early literacy is a key predictor of long-term academic success, yet nearly half of Arizona kindergarteners enter school without foundational literacy skills.
“Literacy begins long before a child enters a classroom,” said Jake Adams, chief development officer at Southwest Human Development. “Through the Grow A Reader Virtual Book Drive, we’re not just giving books—we’re giving families the resources and confidence to support their child’s early learning at home.”
Tax credit benefits
Arizona residents can take advantage of the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit to support the initiative. Individuals can donate up to $470, and couples filing jointly can contribute up to $938, receiving a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state taxes. Donations help provide books and literacy support to families who may otherwise lack these resources.
How to Get Involved
The virtual format of the book drive makes participation easy for businesses and individuals. Companies can engage employees with step-by-step instructions and email templates, while retail locations receive Grow A Reader flowerpots or table tents to encourage customer involvement.
Several local businesses and organizations are already participating, including Arizona Central Credit Union, Discount Tire, Jeremiah’s Italian Ice, Miracle Mile Deli, Starbucks, and Junior Achievement of Arizona.
