EVIT cosmetology students plan Fantasy Hair Show for Dec. 10

The Fantasy Hair Show is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10 at the EVIT Power Campus, 6625 S. Power Road. Tickets are $5 (cash only); there is no charge for children 10 and younger.

The East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) Power Campus in southeast Mesa will be transformed into a creative fantasy world tomorrow when the school’s cosmetology students host their annual hair show.

This event returns to EVIT after having to be canceled last year due to COVID-19 protocols. It will feature fantasy avant-garde looks and hairstyles from different decades in elaborate displays with the students as models. About 200 cosmetology students are expected to participate.

Instructor Sarah Liu said the students have been preparing for this event since October after submitting their styles to the faculty for approval. Each group of students selected a fantasy theme. Then they started working on backdrops, costumes, hairstyles and makeup styles. The end product will be a fantasy land of displays, models and twinkling lights winding through the halls of the Power Campus.

“Our industry is creative and requires a lot of teamwork. This allows students to work as teams to put on a show,” Liu said. “It allows parents and family to come and see what their students have been working on and it builds our community. It gives the students a chance to show off their creative side with something exciting and different.”

Cosmetology is one of EVIT’s most popular career training programs for high school students and adults. The program, which is offered at the Power Campus and the EVIT Main Campus, 1601 S. Main St., Mesa, is tuition-free for public, charter, private and home-schooled high school students who reside in the East Valley. A tuition-based cosmetology program for adults is also offered at the Main Campus.

Cosmetology students receive technical training in the theory of chemicals and hair coloring, cutting, client safety, hygiene and customer relations. Second-year students provide services to the public in working salons at the Power and Main campuses. After completing the 1,600-hour course, they are prepared to take the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology licensing exam.

EVIT Cosmetology students also have the opportunity to follow a credit pathway that flows from EVIT to their state board licensure to an associate degree at Mesa Community College to a bachelor’s degree at Arizona State University. They can go on from there to earn a master’s degree from ASU. The pathway is offered in partnership with ROLFS Salon and L’Oreal.
